Spider-Man 2 fastest-selling PlayStation Studios game ever

Sony has shifted more than 2.5m copies of Marvel's Spider-Man 2 in just 24 hours.

The eye-catching total makes the Spidey sequel Sony's fastest-selling PlayStation Studios game ever - referring to releases made by the company's own studios.

That ginormous launch means Spider-Man 2 hit the 2.5m copies milestone faster than any God of War, Uncharted or The Last of Us. It's also faster to that total than Spider-Man 1.

It's an eye-opening stat, and one which follows excellent Spider-Man 2 sales here in the UK, where it was the biggest boxed game launch last week - beating Nintendo's Super Mario Bros. Wonder and Sega's Sonic Superstars.

Earlier this morning, we noted that UK boxed sales of the game were down significantly on Spider-Man 1 - though we also said that this was likely an incomplete picture due to the rise in digital sales over the past few years.

Sony's own sales data here talks in terms of games "sold through" to PlayStation 5 owners. This will include both boxed games bought in bricks and mortar shops, as well as digital copies of the game that have been downloaded.

It's not all been good news - developer Insomniac is having to patch the game to correct the flag found inside Miles Morales house to be the correct Puerto Rican design, rather than Cuban.

That said, Insomniac already has eyes on the future of its Spider-Men, and suggested what comes next would be part of a "pretty epic" arc, as "Spider-Man 1 was like our Iron Man, and Spider-Man 2 was like a Civil War".

"At once a little simple and a little over-stuffed, Marvel's Spider-Man 2 is still above all a game of immense charm and fluid, free-form style," Eurogamer's Chris Tapsell wrote in our Marvel's Spider-Man 2 review.
